Stone Masons, photograph by Lewis B. Spaulding, Rumford, Maine, ca. 1890. Maine State Museum. Gift of the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission, 87.85.16.
The workers in this scene stand in front of a derrick that operates like a large crane to move massive granite blocks. As stone masons, these men appear to be laying stones for a foundation. This photograph was taken in the Rumford, Maine area. In 1892, the International Paper Company opened a pulp and paper mill in Rumford Falls, Maine. Stones of this size could well have been used for the foundations of the mill buildings there.
