Shoemaker, ambrotype photograph by Merritt Jordan, Bangor, Maine, 1855-1865. Maine State Museum, 85.12.1.
This shoemaker's workbench had a seat for the worker, and the remaining space held the tools and supplies. The shoemaker is hammering pegs to attach the shoe's sole to its upper. Tools in the background of this image include pinchers, knives, and awls to pierce holes in leather to make it easier to sew pieces together.
