Lasting Jack with Last, made by Alfred Bailey, Amesbury, Massachusetts, ca. 1856. Maine State Museum, 81.19.123.
Alfred Bailey of Amesbury, Massachusetts, patented this lasting jack to improve the process for pegging or sewing the sole to the upper of a shoe. The jack held the shoe last in place, but made it adjustable. The shoemaker could position the turntable to work on the shoe from different angles.
